Privacy Policy

How we collect, use and protect personal information

This is the formal version of our privacy practices, in the detail Canadian privacy law expects a business to set out. It's still written in plain English, not legal language. For the short version, see Your privacy.

Collection

What personal information we collect

What we deliberately collect

Your name, address, phone number and email; notes about your equipment (the make of your printer, which room the router is in); appointment and visit records; invoices and payment records; correspondence (calls, texts, emails, and messages sent through this website); and diagnostic notes about the specific problem you asked us to fix.

What a technician might incidentally see

Fixing a device you're signed in to often means your files, email or photos are visible on screen. We don't go looking beyond what the job needs, and we don't copy, photograph, screenshot, or keep anything we happen to see that isn't part of the job.

The one exception: if something on your device looks like it's actively costing you money, such as a scam that's already running, remote-access software you didn't install, or a subscription you don't recognize, you'll always be told about it, because you'd want to know.

Use & retention

Why we collect it, and how long we keep it

  • To do the job

Your contact details and equipment notes are used to book, prepare for, and carry out visits, so we show up knowing what we're dealing with.

  • To bill you and meet our tax obligations

Invoices and payment records are kept for at least six years, which is the retention period the Canada Revenue Agency requires for business tax records.

  • So you don't have to start over

Your name, address, phone number and equipment notes are kept while you're an active customer, so the next visit doesn't start with you explaining your whole setup again.

  • Never for anything else

Your information is never sold, and never used for marketing or advertising, targeted or otherwise.

Passwords

Where a job needs a password, you type it. Passwords are never written down and never stored by us. If a new one gets set up with you, it goes somewhere you control.

That's our own practice. Some of the tools involved in a repair, such as your device's built-in sign-in, a password manager, or a manufacturer's account-recovery system, may store or sync credentials as part of how they normally work. That's between you and that provider; it isn't something we control or see.

Disclosure

Who your information may be shared with

We don't sell personal information. We share it only with the service providers that let us run the business, and only what each one needs to do its job.

Resend

Delivers messages sent through this website's contact form to our inbox.

Square

Processes card payments for jobs and projects.

Vercel

Hosts this website, and automatically keeps standard request logs the way almost every web host does.

Cloudflare, Gmail & VoIP.ms

Route our business email and phone calls, and may retain messages, call records or voicemail as part of providing that service.

We may also disclose personal information if the law requires it, for example in response to a valid court order, or where necessary to protect someone's immediate safety.

This website

How this website itself behaves

The contact form sends your message straight through by email, using Resend (named above) to deliver it. It isn't stored in a database on this site.

This website doesn't run analytics, advertising trackers, or a chat widget that watches what you do, and it doesn't use cookies to track visitors. It does use a hidden field to catch automated spam submissions. That field is never shown to a real visitor, and nothing about it is sent anywhere else.

Our website host, Vercel, automatically records standard technical information for every request it receives (things like IP address, browser type, and the time of the request), the same way almost any website host does, for security and reliability. We don't use that information to build a profile of visitors, and we don't add anything on top of it.

Getting, correcting, or deleting what we hold about you

To find out what's held about you, correct it, or have it deleted, call +1 (778) 817-1033 or email hello@localtechsolutions.ca. You don't need a reason and it won't be awkward.

We may need to keep certain records (invoices, for example) even after a deletion request, for as long as tax law requires.

Complaints & incidents

Making a complaint, and what happens if something goes wrong

  • Tell us first

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your personal information, call or email and we'll look into it directly. Most things get sorted that way.

  • Then the regulator, if needed

If you're not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia (OIPC BC), the independent regulator for private-sector privacy in this province.

If we ever become aware that personal information has been lost, or accessed or disclosed without authorization, we'll act to contain it and assess the risk. Where there's a real risk of significant harm to you, we'll notify you directly and as soon as reasonably possible.

Legislation

The privacy laws that apply to us

We collect and use personal information under British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), the private-sector privacy law that applies to how BC businesses handle customer information.

Because BC's law is recognized as “substantially similar” to the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), PIPEDA generally doesn't apply on top of it for information handled entirely within BC — though it can still apply where information crosses provincial or international borders, which is relevant here because some of the online tools we use are based outside Canada.

Canadian privacy law in this area is under active review, and we'll update this page if the rules that apply to us change.

Still not sure? Ask.

If there's anything here you'd want explained before booking, call and ask. It's a reasonable question and you'll get a straight answer.
